Think before you chew

In the class “On your Own”, taught by Mrs. Britt Platt, students watched the documentary Food, Inc. and learned where their food comes from and how its handled. The documentary also explored the companies who own the food brands and how they changed the way that food is handled over the last half-century.

“The goal of the movie was to cause people to think,” Platt said.

The documentary was about many different food products, but much of the controversy surrounds how these food companies treat their animals and the conditions that they go through before they become food.

The animals are kept the in dark most of their life and put into confined animal feeding operations (CAFO) in order to fatten the animals up faster.

The movie depicts harsh realities.  One is that chickens are given special diets to encourage breast growth. The lifespan of a chicken in these conditions has decreased from three months in the 1990’s to only 40 days a decade later.

Senior Bridgette S. said the video was a big eye opener for her.

“If animals go through the slaughtering process that fast, it’s just not right,” Bridgette S. said.

Since most of the production of meat is controlled by only a few companies, they are concerned more with getting animals on the market than taking the time to grow them properly.

“Companies like Tyson have people in government, so they can away with a lot more,” Bridgette S. said.

However the video wasn’t to condemn these companies, only to shed light on some of the production practices.

“You just have to think about what you’re eating,” Gabby W. (12) said.

With having such a big impact, Food, Inc. has gotten students to think before they eat.
