Oakwood debates good and happy

Over the weekend of Dec. 8, Oakwood’s Debate team participated in a policy debate focused tournament at Glen Oaks High School. Twenty-eight teams debated in the policy event at this specific tournament.“My partner [Wilson M. (12)] and I got Semi-final Speaker Awards,” Katja M. (12), Debate Team President, said.

Overall, the debate team was successful. A lot of debaters came home with trophies. Tia M. (12) and Sam S. (11) reached the Octa-finals. Kate G. (11) and partner Paul O. (11) achieved similar success and won Quarter-final Speaker Awards.

“Through each round, we accumulated points and eventually got enough to get into the Quarter-finals,” Kate G. said. “Making it to the Quarter-finals automatically makes us eligible for the state tournament sometime in Feb.”

The districts tournament will take place in early Feb. and state will be held in late Feb. in to early Mar., according to OHSSL’s website. Kate G. is a two-year debater and performed well at the tournament.

“I got the 5th place Speaker Award out of all 56 individual debaters at the tournament,” Kate G. said.

Oakwood’s Debate team remains to be one of the best in the country, and its participants have great experiences.

Katja M. said, “My favorite thing is definitely the people. It’s a chance for me to get to know people that I would otherwise not know.”

The Oakwood debate team returns home from another successful tournament hosted by Glen Oaks High School.
