Football team debuts new golden look

Senior captains Noah R., Trent J., Dan R. and Max B. marched into Mack Hummon Stadium on a bitter Friday night, cleats knocking on the concrete pathway leading to the field. They led the new-look Lumberjacks, wearing gold jerseys with blue numbers and trim.

These new gold jerseys were purchased through money raised from the team’s annual ‘Lift-a-Thon’ over the summer.  The jerseys are made by Riddell, and are a tighter-fitting jersey than the Jacks’ previous model, making them harder for opponents to grab.

With a new coach this year in Rick Robertson, the team decided to go with a new look as well. “It brings a bit of newness to the program,” Robertson said via telephone.

As for the team, they enjoy the change in style.

“I like them a lot; they’re really cool,” starting sophomore quarterback Max B. said via telephone. “I think that the uniforms are very fresh and they look dope,” junior defensive back Logan J. said.

And the jerseys are here to stay. Robertson expects that the team will wear them for their next home game, homecoming weekend versus Brookville.

While the novel uniforms brought energy to Mack Hummon Stadium on Friday, September 16th, the Jacks did lose their first game wearing the golden jerseys, falling 27-22 to the Valley View Spartans.

The newly-uniformed Lumberjacks put up a solid fight against Valley View, a team that lost to the prominent Dunbar Wolverines by just six points four weeks ago.

After last Friday’s loss to Eaton and defending Region 12 Offensive Player of the Year, Cole French, the Jacks look to rebound this Friday at home against Brookville. Kickoff will be at 7:30pm.
